How Delivery Season Changes the Real Miles From Your Tesla Referral

Most timing advice about a Tesla UK referral is about a single click — get the code attached before you pay, and the rest of the calendar doesn't matter. That's true for the referral mechanic. It's not the whole story for what those 650 free Supercharging miles are actually worth once your car arrives, because the month you take delivery changes something few UK guides publish: how many real miles that credit drives you.
The one timing rule that never moves
Nothing below changes this: the referral code has to be clicked and attached before you pay the order fee, full stop — it can't be added retroactively, and it isn't affected by which month you eventually take delivery. What Tesla's "650 miles" figure actually is
The referral doesn't hand over a fixed distance. It credits a fixed amount of Supercharging energy, quoted in miles using a mild-weather efficiency assumption. Drive in genuinely mild conditions and you'll get close to the full 650 miles from it. Drive through a UK winter and the same car needs more energy to cover each mile — so the same energy credit takes you a shorter real distance, even though nothing about the credit itself has shrunk.
The maths, by ambient temperature

Putting a 2026 delivery window against it
A car handed over in a UK January or February, when ambient temperatures commonly sit between 0°C and 5°C, sees the credit behave closer to 507–559 real miles rather than the headline 650. A car delivered in a UK July or August, closer to 20°C, sees close to the full figure. Spring and autumn deliveries sit somewhere in between, and the gap narrows every week as the season turns. None of this is a Tesla policy quirk — it's the same physics that shortens anyone's winter range, just applied to a fixed energy credit instead of a full battery.
Charging speed: the honest, unquantified part
Very cold battery temperatures can also reduce peak charging rates until the battery has warmed up, which is why Tesla's own navigation preconditions the battery ahead of a routed Supercharger stop. We don't have a UK-specific, sourced figure for exactly how much that slows a typical winter top-up, so we're not going to invent one — expect it to matter most on genuinely cold days and barely at all on a mild one, and let preconditioning do its job on a longer trip.
What doesn't move: the £ value
The pound value of the credit — what we calculate on the Referral-Savings Calculator using Supercharger pricing — is fixed at the point it's granted, because it's really a fixed amount of energy (kWh), not a fixed distance. Winter delivery doesn't cost you money; it just means the same money-equivalent energy gets you a shorter real trip until the weather warms up.
So should you delay your order for a milder delivery month?
No. The effect is real but small in absolute terms — a handful of tens of miles at worst, temporary, and gone once your local weather warms up. Delaying an order chasing a specific delivery month risks a far bigger cost: losing weeks or months of use of the car, and possibly the referral programme's own terms shifting in the meantime (see what actually changed for 2026, below). The honest advice is to order when you're ready, attach a verified code first, and simply expect a few weeks of shorter real range if your car lands in winter.
