How this is worked out

Charging cost uses a fixed 8,000-mile reference at the home rate (24.5p/kWh) so the two cars are compared fairly. BiK uses the 2026/27 rate (4%) for a 40% taxpayer. Prices, ranges and efficiencies are checked 2026-07-13; confirm live prices at tesla.com/en_gb.

How the Model 3 (RWD) vs Model Y (RWD) figures above are calculated

Both cars are put on the same footing so the comparison is fair — here is exactly how each column in the table is built.

  1. Fix a common mileage. Every comparison uses a fixed 8,000 miles/year reference, regardless of which two models you pick, so neither car is favoured by a different mileage assumption.
  2. Convert to energy per model. kWh = 8,000 ÷ mi/kWh — Model 3 (RWD): 8,000 ÷ 4.1 = 1951 kWh; Model Y (RWD): 8,000 ÷ 3.7 = 2162 kWh.
  3. Price both at the home rate. £ = kWh × 24.5p ÷ 100 — Model 3 (RWD): £478 / yr; Model Y (RWD): £530 / yr.
  4. Work out BiK for both, at the same tax rate. BiK/mo = (list price × 4% × 40%) ÷ 12 — Model 3 (RWD): (£39,990 × 4% × 40%) ÷ 12 = £53 / mo; Model Y (RWD): (£44,990 × 4% × 40%) ÷ 12 = £60 / mo.

What the comparison deliberately holds constant

To compare two cars fairly the calculator fixes several inputs — the same reference mileage, the same home rate, the same taxpayer band. That's the right choice for an apples-to-apples number, and it means the output answers a narrower question than it might appear to: which car costs less, all else equal. All else is rarely equal, so three things are worth adding by hand.

  • Your real mileage, not the reference figure. The efficiency gap between these cars only matters in proportion to how far you drive. At low mileage it's noise; at high mileage it compounds every year.
  • Your actual home/public split. A comparison at the home rate flatters both cars equally, but if much of your charging is public the running-cost gap widens in favour of the more efficient one.
  • The £50,000 VED line. This is the one that can dwarf everything else on this page. Since 1 April 2026 the Expensive Car Supplement threshold for zero-emission cars is £50,000 on list price, and crossing it costs the supplement for five years. If one configuration sits below and another above, that single fact can outweigh every running-cost difference in the table.

Where the two cars are genuinely identical

Worth stating plainly on a site that hands out referral codes: the referral benefit is the same on both. Around 650 free Supercharging miles on a new Model 3 or Model Y, with no model-specific bonus and no version of the code that favours one. So the referral belongs nowhere in this comparison — take it either way, and let the decision turn on the rows that actually differ.

The same goes for the ordering mechanics: open the link before configuring, check the referral line in the order summary before paying. Identical for both, and unaffected by which you pick.

The thing a cost comparison structurally can't settle

Most people choosing between these two are not really choosing on cost, and it's worth saying so on a page built to compare costs. One is a saloon and one is a taller crossover with a bigger boot and a higher driving position. If you need the space or the access, no running-cost figure should talk you out of it; if you don't, the more efficient car will keep being the cheaper one for as long as you own it.

Should I buy a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y in the UK?

The Model 3 is cheaper, more efficient and has slightly more range per variant; the Model Y is roomier with a hatchback boot and higher driving position. Company-car drivers often pick on BiK cost and boot space — compare both above for your usage.

Can I still buy a Tesla Model S or Model X in the UK?
