The March 2026 Referral Overhaul: What Actually Moved in Your UK Incentive Stack
Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · published 2026-03-01 · figures checked 2026-07-13.
Our first post on this overhaul covered what changed and the long-term expiry angle. This one asks a narrower, more practical question: for a UK buyer stacking a referral against salary sacrifice and the home-charger grant, did March 2026 actually move anything in that combined total? Short answer: barely — and it's worth showing exactly why, line by line.

The four changes, restated as stack line-items
- Vehicle eligibility: Model S and Model X dropped from the referral-eligible list; the interior pictured above is the Model S's — a model that, alongside Model X, no longer carries any UK referral benefit at all as of March 2026.
- Referrer reward: set globally at a $250 Tesla Credit (or local equivalent) per successful referral.
- Loyalty discount: a separate US scheme, cut from $1,000 to $500 on premium vehicles.
- Credit expiry: referral and loyalty credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date (extendable to 36, as covered in our earlier post).
Running each line against a real 2026 UK buyer's stack
Take a typical UK buyer ordering a Model Y (RWD) through a salary-sacrifice scheme, renting their home so they're eligible for the EV chargepoint grant. Their stack, before and after the overhaul:
| Stack item | Before March 2026 | After March 2026 | Changed for this buyer? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral (Model 3/Y) | 650 free Supercharging miles | 650 free Supercharging miles | No — Model Y was never affected by the S/X removal |
| Salary-sacrifice BiK | 4% for 2026/27 (HMRC schedule) | 4% for 2026/27 (HMRC schedule) | No — BiK runs on its own HMRC schedule, entirely separate from Tesla's programme |
| EV chargepoint grant | Up to £350 (renters/flats) | Up to £350 (renters/flats) | No — a GOV.UK scheme, unrelated to Tesla's referral terms |
| Referrer's own credit expiry | Already 12 months, extendable | Reiterated at 12 months, extendable to 36 | Restated, not new — see our expiry-focused post for the detail |
Every stack item a Model 3/Y buyer actually relies on reads identically before and after. The only line that genuinely moved — vehicle eligibility narrowing to Model 3/Y — only bites if you were comparing against an S or X, and S/X referral terms had already become a moot comparison for most UK shoppers given their reduced UK availability.
Where it does matter: the referrer side, not the buyer side
The overhaul's real target is the referrer's reward and its expiry clock, not the buyer's stack. If you're the one giving out a code rather than receiving one, the $250 headline figure and the 12-month expiry are worth tracking — but the UK's own referrer £ amount still isn't consistently published, so we're not converting that $250 into a sterling promise here. What we can say: it doesn't change what a buyer gets, only what a frequent referrer should expect and when it lapses.
Why this is worth publishing even though "nothing changed"
A "nothing changed" verdict from a primary-source comparison is still useful information — it's the honest alternative to letting a scary headline ("Tesla overhauls referral programme!") imply your own stack shrank when it didn't. The one thing genuinely worth re-checking after any Tesla programme announcement is whether your specific model is still eligible; for Model 3 and Model Y, it is.
