Tesla's March 2026 Referral & Loyalty Overhaul: What Actually Matters Long-Term for UK Buyers

In March 2026 Tesla revised its global referral and loyalty programme terms. Some of the headline changes were already reflected in what UK buyers see; others are US-specific and don't map cleanly onto the UK terms at all. Here's what actually changed, and why the least-discussed detail — credit expiry — is the one with the most long-term bite for anyone giving out a referral code repeatedly.

What changed globally, dated and sourced

• Model S and Model X were removed from the referral-eligible vehicle list; the programme now covers Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck.
• The referrer reward was set at a $250 Tesla Credit (or local equivalent) per successful referral.
• The loyalty discount on premium vehicles was cut from $1,000 to $500.
• Referral and loyalty credits expire 12 months after the Grant Date.

What's UK-specific, and where the read needs care

Two of those four points need a UK gloss rather than a straight copy-paste:

• Cybertruck isn't sold in the UK — no official UK sale, no factory right-hand-drive, and it isn't road-legal in Great Britain on pedestrian-safety and lighting grounds. So while the global list now reads "Model 3 / Model Y / Cybertruck," the practical UK list is still Model 3 and Model Y only.
• The exact referrer £ reward for UK owners isn't consistently published the way the US $250 Tesla Credit figure is. We won't invent a converted figure here — the mechanic (Supercharging credits and/or Tesla Credits, viewable in the app's Loot Box) is confirmed, capped at 10 referrals per calendar year, but the precise £ amount should be checked directly in your own Tesla account rather than assumed from the US number.

Worth a separate, deliberate note so it isn't conflated: the US loyalty discount landing at $500 has no connection to the UK's existing £500 off inventory cars referral benefit — they're different schemes (loyalty vs referral) in different markets, and the matching number is coincidence, not the same mechanic.

The long-term angle almost nobody covers: expiry

The headline changes get the coverage, but the detail that actually compounds over time is the 12-month expiry on referrer credits, extendable up to a maximum of 36 months as new referrals land. For a UK owner who refers occasionally rather than constantly, that's a real "use it or lose it" clock — a credit earned from a referral today is gone in a year unless another successful referral extends the window. That's precisely why a rotating pool of codes (rather than one owner's static link) matters for fairness: it spreads referral opportunities — and the credits attached to them — across multiple listed owners instead of concentrating them, and expiry, on a single person.

Bottom line

For a UK buyer today, none of this changes the buyer-side benefit: it's still 650 free Supercharging miles on a new Model 3 or Model Y, applied automatically at order time. The overhaul mostly reshapes the referrer's side of the equation — and the expiry clock is the part worth actually remembering.
