Tesla's New Model Y L: What It Means If You're Ordering a UK Model Y Today

Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · published 2026-07-02 · figures checked 2026-07-13.

We covered what the Model Y L's US launch means for referral maths in a separate post. This one answers the question that actually decides what a UK buyer does this week: does the Model Y L replace anything you can order today, and should you hold off ordering because of it?

An addition, not a replacement — the US pricing spread shows it

Tesla launched the Model Y L in the US on 2 July 2026 at $61,990 (Launch Series) alongside — not instead of — the existing Model Y range. Full 2026 US Model Y pricing now runs from $41,630 for the Standard RWD up to $63,630 for the Model Y L, a roughly $22,000 spread across the line-up. That's a lineup being extended upward with a longer, six-seat trim, not a standard five-seat Model Y being discontinued. Sources: Electrek; Cars.com.

What's actually orderable in the UK today, unchanged

Right now, the UK line-up is what it was before this announcement: Model 3 (RWD) (£39,990), Model 3 Long Range AWD (£44,990), Model Y (RWD) (£44,990) and Model Y Long Range AWD (£51,990). None of these has been withdrawn, discounted in anticipation, or flagged for replacement by Tesla UK. Compare them properly on our Model Comparison tool rather than pausing a decision on a car with no confirmed UK date.

Should you wait for it?

We'd only ever answer this with a hedge, because the honest facts support one: Tesla has given no confirmed UK launch date, no right-hand-drive confirmation, and no GBP price for the Model Y L. Waiting on that is waiting on an unknown timeline. Meanwhile, ordering today keeps two things you'd otherwise be gambling with:

If a six-seat option is genuinely the deciding factor for your household — not just curiosity about new Tesla news — that's a real reason to wait. If it isn't, there's no structural reason a UK order placed today is worse off for the Model Y L existing in the US.

What would carry over if it does arrive in the UK

Based purely on how the programme is structured today (this is our own inference, not a Tesla announcement): the referral has applied per vehicle line rather than per trim, so a UK-spec Model Y L would most plausibly carry the same 650-mile benefit as the rest of the Model Y range. We'll confirm or correct that the moment Tesla UK actually lists it.

Bottom line

The Model Y L is real, US-only, and additive to the range — not a signal to pause a UK order. Compare what's actually available today on the Model Comparison tool, and use a verified code if you're ready to configure.
