On 2 July 2026 Tesla launched the Model Y L — a stretched, six-seat, three-row version of the Model Y — in the US and Puerto Rico. It's genuinely new news, and it's already generating "does this change my referral?" questions from UK readers. Short answer: not today. Here's the reasoning, not just the answer.

What actually launched, dated and sourced

The Model Y L adds roughly 180 mm of length and a 2+2+2 six-seat layout to the standard five-seat Model Y, with an estimated range of around 325 miles. It launched at $61,990 for the Launch Series trim — US pricing, in US dollars, on a car that is not currently sold in the UK. Does this change the referral maths for a UK order today?

No — and it's worth being precise about why. The referral benefit Tesla UK offers isn't tied to a specific trim or seat count; it's tied to the order being a new Model 3 or Model Y, full stop. Whatever variant a UK buyer configures today — RWD or Long Range, five seats — still carries the same 650 free Supercharging miles when a referral is attached before the order fee is paid. A US-only six-seat variant launching doesn't touch that mechanic, because it isn't part of the UK order flow at all right now.

If Model Y L does eventually reach the UK, here's the honest projection

Tesla hasn't announced a UK date, RHD availability, or a GBP price for the Model Y L, so anything specific would be invented — we won't do that. What we can say from how the programme is structured today:

• The referral has historically applied per vehicle line (Model 3 / Model Y), not per trim, so a six-seat Model Y L would most plausibly inherit the same 650-mile benefit rather than a different figure — but that's an inference from current structure, not a confirmed fact, and we'll update this page the moment Tesla UK says otherwise.
• The Electric Car Grant threshold (roughly £37,000, source: GOV.UK) already excludes every current Tesla model. A longer, six-seat Model Y variant would need to price meaningfully below today's UK Model Y RWD (£44,990) to change that picture — the US pricing spread (+$22,000 for the top Y L trim over the base RWD) makes that an unlikely direction.
• The home-charger grant mechanics (§ below on our other posts) don't vary by seat count or trim at all — they're about the property, not the car.

Bottom line for UK buyers today
