No Electric Car Grant on a Tesla — and No Dealer Discount Either

A grant-eligible EV bought through a normal franchised dealer can, in principle, combine two separate reductions: the government's Electric Car Grant, and whatever the dealer is willing to knock off the list price on the day. A Tesla order structurally can't do either. Here's the honest comparison, mechanism by mechanism, not just the eligibility rule.
Why Tesla fails the grant, restated briefly
The Electric Car Grant runs two tests: a price ceiling around £37,000, and a manufacturer sustainability test tied to verified Science Based Targets. Reporting indicates Tesla currently doesn't appear on the eligible-manufacturer list on that second test — separate from, and in addition to, every current Tesla model's price sitting above the ceiling anyway. What a grant-eligible, dealer-sold EV can combine
A franchised dealer has room to move on price independently of any government scheme — trade-in valuations, end-of-quarter targets, finance-deal incentives, all the ordinary levers of a negotiated sale. We don't have a reliable, current UK-wide average figure for how much that typically shaves off a list price, and we're not going to invent one — it varies by dealer, model and month. But the mechanism is real: a grant-eligible buyer can stack the government's up-to-£3,750 reduction on top of whatever the dealer separately agrees to.
What a Tesla order can combine instead
Tesla sells direct, with no dealer network and no listed price that a salesperson is empowered to negotiate down. That structurally removes the second lever entirely — there's no one on the other side of the desk to haggle with. What's left is the referral: 650 free Supercharging miles on a new Model 3 or Model Y (roughly £72–£84 depending on model and Supercharger tariff), automatically applied, no negotiation required and no eligibility gate beyond clicking the link before you pay.

On a pure lever-count basis, that's not close — a grant-eligible rival can stack two price-facing reductions where Tesla structurally offers one, smaller one. We think UK buyers deserve that stated plainly rather than buried under "650 miles!" marketing.
Where the honest counterweight is — and where it isn't quantified
None of this is the whole cost picture. Running costs — home charging at 24.5p/kWh versus petrol, or the UK's own growing Tesla network (2,747 chargers by end of May 2026, roughly 25–40p/kWh) — can matter more over years of ownership than either a one-off grant or a one-off referral.
