Tesla and the UK's £3,750 Electric Car Grant: Why the Paperwork Looks So Different From a Referral

Two UK EV incentives get mentioned in the same breath as often as they get confused: the government's Electric Car Grant (up to £3,750) and Tesla's own referral programme (650 free Supercharging miles). Tesla qualifies for neither the grant nor a straightforward comparison to it — here's why, and why the paperwork behind each is so different.

Why Tesla isn't on the Electric Car Grant list

The Electric Car Grant's published eligibility runs on two tests: a price ceiling (roughly £37,000, with some higher-spec versions of an otherwise-eligible model allowed up to about £42,000) and a manufacturer sustainability test tied to verified Science Based Targets. Reporting indicates Tesla currently fails to appear on the eligible-manufacturer list on that second test, separate from — and in addition to — every current Tesla model's price sitting above the ceiling anyway. The paperwork gap: a grant claim vs a referral click

This is the part that actually matters for a buyer's experience, not just the eligibility rule. The Electric Car Grant is manufacturer- and dealer-administered — it depends on the seller being on the approved list and applying the discount through government-verified paperwork before the price you see even reflects it. A Tesla referral has none of that machinery: click the link, configure, and the 650 miles show up on the order summary before you pay, with no separate application or approval step. Different mechanism entirely — one is a government scheme with eligibility gates and administration; the other is Tesla's own direct-sales benefit.

An honest note on the home-charger grant figure

Reporting is circulating that the UK's home EV chargepoint grant rose from £350 to £500 from 1 April 2026. Our own published constant on this site currently states up to £350, checked 2026-07-13 against GOV.UK's grants collection — we could not independently confirm the £500 figure against a primary GOV.UK page while writing this, so we're flagging the discrepancy plainly rather than silently picking one number. Network growth doesn't change the referral figure, but it changes convenience

Separately, reporting counts 2,747 Tesla chargers across the UK by the end of May 2026, at roughly 25–40p/kWh — a wider range than our own Supercharger-specific member/non-member figures (41p / 53p), likely because it spans destination chargers as well as Superchargers. More chargers doesn't change what the referral's 650 miles are worth in £ — that maths runs on Supercharger pricing specifically — but it does mean there are more places to actually redeem them.

Bottom line

Don't go looking for a £3,750 grant on a Tesla order — it isn't there, on price or on the manufacturer test. What is there, automatically and without paperwork, is the referral's 650 miles.
