Tesla's $12.99 US Charging Membership, Converted to Pounds

Tesla's US Charging Membership is priced in dollars, on a US network, for US Supercharger rates. None of that transfers directly to a UK order. But the question we actually get from UK readers isn't "does the membership apply here" — it's simpler: in pounds, is it worth more or less than what a UK referral already gives me? Here's the sterling-terms answer, not the dollar one.
What's actually being sold, and where
With over 60,000 Superchargers now live across North America and full Model Y access, Tesla sells a paid Charging Membership at $12.99/month there, which lowers the per-kWh Supercharger rate — reporting suggests it pays for itself once you're doing roughly four or more Supercharge sessions a month. Note the plug hardware differs too — North America uses Tesla's proprietary connector, shown right in the photo above, against the standardised Type 2 connector used across the UK and Europe.
Converting $12.99/month to sterling, honestly
$12.99 a month is $155.88 a year. At an illustrative rate near $1.27 to the pound in mid-2026 — a rate that floats daily, so treat this as a ballpark, not a quote you could act on — that's roughly £10.20 a month, or about £123 a year. We're not claiming Tesla charges that in the UK; there's no equivalent UK subscription to convert. This is purely "if you tried to price the US product in pounds, here's the number," so you can weigh it against what the UK referral actually delivers.
What the UK referral delivers instead, in the same currency
The UK doesn't have a membership fee, paid or otherwise — it has a built-in member vs non-member Supercharger rate (41p/kWh vs 53p/kWh, checked 2026-07-13), and separately, a one-off 650-mile referral credit on a new Model 3 or Model Y. Priced in the same currency as the US figure above:

So the illustrative £123/year US-equivalent figure sits above even the higher end of what a one-off UK referral delivers. That's not really a fair fight, though — the US figure is a recurring annual cost a member chooses to pay for a lower rate every month; the UK figures are a single credit that costs nothing, on top of a member rate that's simply the default, no subscription required. Different shapes entirely, and the UK shape doesn't ask you to keep paying to keep the lower rate.
Why we won't push the FX conversion further
We've kept this to one illustrative rate and flagged it as such deliberately — a currency conversion is only ever a snapshot, and quoting it to more precision than "roughly £123" would imply an accuracy we don't have. If you want a live rate, check a currency converter on the day; don't treat our figure as a fixed price.
The number that actually matters for a UK network
The UK's own charger count and per-kWh range (currently around 2,747 Tesla chargers, roughly 25–40p/kWh) is a separate, UK-sourced figure we cover properly in our Electric Car Grant coverage — worth reading if the network size, not the currency conversion, is what you're actually trying to size up.
