The Expensive Car Supplement Threshold for EVs Is Now £50,000 — and Sources Disagree on the Amount
Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · filed
A tax that lands in years two to six, on exactly the cars UK buyers configure, and that no referral benefit offsets. The threshold is settled; the amount is not.

Every calculator on this site tries to give you a number you can plan against. This is a cost line that belongs in that number and usually is not: the Expensive Car Supplement. For zero-emission cars the threshold was £40,000 until 31 March 2026 and rose to £50,000 from 1 April 2026. It is charged in years two to six of registration.
Why the threshold move matters more than it sounds
A £10,000 rise in a threshold sounds generous, and for part of the Tesla range it genuinely is — it moves cars that sit in the £40,000s out of the charge entirely. But it lands in the middle of the UK Tesla line-up rather than above it, which means the supplement is now a configuration-dependent cost. Two Model Ys ordered on the same day, one either side of £50,000, do not carry the same six-year bill. Options push list price, and list price is what the threshold tests.
The part we cannot settle for you
The amount is where our sources stop agreeing. One states £440 across five years. Another states £640 per year for years two to six. Those are not close: over the full run they differ by roughly an order of magnitude.
| Source says | Implied total over years 2–6 |
|---|---|
| £440 for 5 years | £440 |
| £640 per year | £3,200 |
We are not going to pick the smaller figure to make a Tesla look cheaper, and we are not going to pick the larger one to look cautious. Check the current rate with DVLA for your own registration date before you budget. If you want to model it here in the meantime, run your total both ways — the honest output of this particular calculation is a range, not a point.
What no referral benefit does about it
Nothing, and this is the bit worth being blunt about. The UK referral benefit is paid in Supercharging miles, not as a price reduction. It therefore does not lower the car's list price, which means it cannot pull a configuration under the £50,000 threshold. A cash discount might have; free charging cannot. If you are close to the line, the lever is the options list, not the referral link.
Separately and unchanged: Tesla remains outside the Electric Car Grant for want of verified Science Based Targets, and that grant's £37,000 RRP cap would exclude the Model Y regardless. So neither of the two government levers helps here. The referral-savings calculator covers what the referral does do.
Dated, and worth re-checking. Vehicle tax bands and supplements move at fiscal events. The 1 April 2026 threshold change is well sourced; the annual amount is not, and DVLA is the authority on it.
