The £37,000 Grant Cap, Applied to Every UK Tesla Configuration

A price cap plus a manufacturer condition. Run against the UK line-up, the answer is the same in every row — and a referral benefit cannot change it.
Two conditions gate the Electric Car Grant: a list-price cap of roughly £37,000, and manufacturer-level environmental criteria — an SBTi-verified target being the requirement most often cited. Applied to the UK Tesla line-up, the result is the same in every row: no qualifying configuration.
Why both conditions matter
A reader who checks only the price cap concludes that a hypothetical sub-£37,000 Tesla would qualify. That is half the rule. Tesla is absent from the published eligible list, which is a manufacturer-level outcome rather than a per-configuration one — so specifying downwards does not open the door.
Why a referral cannot help
Because the cap is measured against list price and the referral benefit is not a price reduction. In the UK a new-order referral applies 650 free Supercharging miles to the car's account — worth roughly £76 at the member rate of 41p/kWh, or about £98 at the non-member rate — and leaves the purchase price untouched.
The same asymmetry is a small advantage elsewhere: a referral cannot push a configuration over a cap either, so it is safe to attach when threading a configuration under any threshold.
The inventory exception, stated precisely
Tesla UK's programme applies £500 off on inventory (ex-demo or in-stock) vehicles instead of the mileage credit. That is a price reduction, and it is the one place where referral terms interact with a transaction value at all. It is a different reward on the same rule — attach the link before ordering or lose it.
What UK buyers are left with
Three levers, none of them referral-shaped, and all larger: the EV chargepoint grant of up to £350 toward a home charger for eligible households, the gap between home off-peak charging at 7.5p/kWh and public rapid charging at 53p/kWh, and company-car or salary-sacrifice tax treatment. The referral is the only guaranteed item, and the smallest.
What this changes about the number you should be running
Remove the grant line from any UK Tesla model entirely. Its absence is worth more to a budget than the referral's presence, and a spreadsheet carrying a £3,750 line that will never arrive is wrong by ten times the size of the benefit this site tracks. Why the cap is the wrong thing to focus on anyway
A price cap invites configuration games — trimming an option to slip under a threshold — and none of them help here, because the manufacturer condition sits above the price condition. That makes this a rare case where a buyer can stop optimising: no specification decision on a Tesla changes the grant answer, so the effort is better spent on the levers that do move, which are tariff, finance route and, for business buyers, tax treatment. The referral benefit belongs in the same category as those: attach it, size it honestly at about £76, and do not build a purchase around it.
Re-verify before relying on it
Grant eligibility is reviewed periodically and a manufacturer absent today is not necessarily absent next year. Read the current published eligible-vehicle list rather than any summary, including this one — which is dated for exactly that reason.
