Trade-In, Part Exchange and the Referral Link — the UK Order of Operations
Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · published 2026-09-02 · figures checked 2026-07-13.
A part exchange does not compete with a referral — the two are unrelated instruments. What it does is send you out of the ordering flow and back in, which is the most common way a UK buyer loses 650 free miles without noticing.
The rule underneath the checklist
A referral attaches to the order, through the link, at the moment the order is placed. It is not attached to your account or your email address, and it cannot be added afterwards. Everything below follows from that.
The sequence
- Do the comparison shopping first. Trims, colours, delivery estimates — all of it, with no referral link involved. This is the step that generates stray tabs.
- Get your part-exchange figure separately. It is an input to your budget, not to the referral, so gather it before you start ordering rather than mid-flow.
- Have your finance inputs ready. Deposit, term, target monthly.
- Open the referral link last, in a clean tab, immediately before configuring.
- Configure once, in that tab. If you must check something, return to the same tab.
- Read the order summary before paying. The 650-mile benefit line must be visible. This is the only proof.
- Then submit the part exchange and finance details. The benefit is already attached; the payment path cannot remove it.
Why a trade-in feels like it should interfere
Because both are described as reducing what you pay, so buyers assume they compete for the same slot. They do not, and the reason is worth being precise about: the referral benefit is not money off the car. It is charging distance credited to the new car's account. It does not reduce the purchase price, the amount financed, the part-exchange valuation, or the VAT base. Nothing in a trade-in calculation changes because a referral is attached.
The two-party case
If someone else places the order — a leasing company, a business account, a family member on their own Tesla account — the referral attaches to their order or to nothing. Ask, before signing, whose account submits the order.
Inventory cars: same rule, higher risk
Inventory stock is ordered from a listing rather than a configurator, so the flow is shorter and faster and it is easy to arrive from a search result with nothing attached. Note also that inventory terms differ: Tesla UK's programme applies £500 off on inventory vehicles rather than the 650 miles — a different reward, on the same attach-before-ordering rule.
Why this sequence is worth writing down
Because it is the only part of the referral process a buyer fully controls, and the failure is silent. Nothing rejects a lost referral: the order completes normally, the car arrives, and the absence only shows as a benefit line that was never on the summary. Buyers therefore attribute the loss to a "bad code" and go looking for a better one, which cannot help. The code was almost certainly fine; the session that finished the order never carried it. Ten seconds of sequencing beats any amount of code-hunting.
If the summary shows no benefit line
Do not place the order intending to fix it. Close the flow, reopen the referral link, configure again. Fifteen minutes of reconfiguration is the cheapest version of this mistake; there is no version that works after the order exists.
