A UK Referral Benefit Will Not Get You Under a Price Threshold

A recurring question with a firm answer: no. 650 free Supercharging miles cannot pull a configuration under a price cap, because the benefit never touches the price. Understanding why also explains why it cannot push you over one.
What the benefit actually is
Charging distance credited to the new car's Tesla account, drawn down automatically at the stall. It is not a discount, not a rebate, and not a credit against the invoice. The purchase price on your order is identical with and without it.
The thresholds this matters for
| Threshold | Measured against | Referral effect |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Car Grant cap | List price of the vehicle (currently around £37,000, plus manufacturer criteria) | None — and no Tesla currently qualifies regardless |
| Expensive Car Supplement | List price at first registration | None |
| Finance / LTV calculations | Purchase price and deposit | None |
| VAT and part-exchange maths | Transaction values | None |
Why buyers expect otherwise
Because other markets' referral benefits have been cash discounts in the past, and because "£500 off" genuinely does exist on UK inventory vehicles — a price reduction rather than a charging credit. Mixing those two instruments produces the belief that a referral can move a threshold. On a new-order Model 3 or Model Y in the UK, it cannot.
The one place the asymmetry helps
It cannot push you over a cap either. A buyer threading a configuration under a price threshold can attach a referral without any risk of disturbing the number the threshold is measured against — which is the reverse of what most people assume, and genuinely useful in a market with a capped incentive.
Why the confusion is worth correcting rather than ignoring
Because it produces two concrete mistakes. Buyers hunt for a referral believing it will pull them under a grant cap, and are disappointed by a benefit that was never going to do that. And buyers near a cap sometimes avoid attaching a referral in case it disturbs their eligibility, which costs them a free benefit for no reason. Stating the mechanism once — a charging credit is applied to the car's account, the list price is untouched — removes both errors in a sentence.
What does move a threshold
Specification. Wheels, paint, interior, tow bar, and any option that changes the list price. If you are close to a cap, that is where the decision lives — and it is worth far more attention than referral arithmetic.
The one exception worth naming: inventory stock
On inventory vehicles Tesla UK's programme applies £500 off rather than the mileage credit, and that is a price reduction — it moves the transaction value. So the blanket statement "a referral never affects price" is true for a new configured order and false for inventory stock, which is exactly the kind of distinction that gets flattened out of referral content. If you are buying inventory and sitting near a threshold, the reward is a different instrument and the arithmetic changes; check the order summary for which of the two you are being given.
The honest summary
Attach the referral because it is free and immediate, and expect it to change exactly one thing: the charging balance on the new car's account for its first six months. Anything else you read about it moving prices, caps or taxes is describing a different instrument. Model the numbers that do move in the Referral-Savings Calculator.
