What a Tesla Referral Code Is Worth, Model by Model

Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · published 2026-07-18 · figures checked 2026-07-13.

Our worked-example guide walks through one order end to end. This one does something different: it puts a £ figure on the referral's 650 free Supercharging miles for every current Model 3 and Model Y variant, side by side, so you're not left generalising from someone else's car.

The maths, the same for every model

The referral always credits the same 650 miles — what changes is how far those miles go, because efficiency (miles per kWh) differs by variant. The value in £ is: (650 ÷ efficiency in mi/kWh) × Supercharger price in £/kWh. We show it at both the member Supercharger rate (41p/kWh) and the non-member rate (53p/kWh, checked 2026-07-13) since not every driver has a paid membership.

ModelList priceEfficiency650 miles at member rate650 miles at non-member rate
Model 3 (RWD)£39,9904.1 mi/kWh£65£84
Model 3 Long Range AWD£44,9903.9 mi/kWh£68£88
Model Y (RWD)£44,9903.7 mi/kWh£72£93
Model Y Long Range AWD£51,9903.6 mi/kWh£74£96

The pattern is consistent: less efficient variants (lower mi/kWh) turn the same 650 miles into a slightly higher £ value, because covering the same distance takes more energy. It's a small difference across this range — a few pounds — but it's worth knowing you're not getting a smaller referral benefit just because you chose the Long Range variant.

Adding the one grant that stacks regardless of model

Model choice doesn't affect eligibility for the EV chargepoint grant (up to £350, for renters and flat owners under the current scheme) — it's a fixed amount tied to your home-charging situation, not your car. Add it to any row above and every current model's quantifiable, sourced stack sits in a fairly narrow band: roughly £424–£434 depending on model, Supercharger membership and grant eligibility.

None of these four current models qualify for the separate Electric Car Grant (up to £3,750, restricted to EVs under roughly £37,000) — every variant above starts higher than that threshold.

Face value versus what you'll actually realise

One refinement to the table, and it's the difference between a number that looks right and a number you can plan with. Every figure above is the cost of buying 650 miles of Supercharging at a Supercharger price. That is the correct way to value the credit only if you would otherwise have Supercharged those miles. For most UK drivers, you wouldn't.

If you charge at home for the bulk of your mileage, the credit displaces home charging rather than Supercharging — and the saving is then the difference between the two rates, not the full Supercharger price. Two adjustments make the table honest for your own case:

None of this makes the referral not worth taking: it costs nothing, so any realised value is pure gain. It does mean the honest framing is a range rather than a figure — the table's number is the ceiling, reached only by someone who does most of their charging on the road. We'd rather tell you that than quote you the ceiling and let you plan around it.

Run it for your own driving, not just the model default

The table above uses each model's typical real-world efficiency. Your own driving style, climate and route mix will move the true mi/kWh figure a little in either direction. For a number tuned to your own car and tariff rather than the model default, use the Referral-Savings Calculator — it's editable, not fixed to these defaults.
