US coverage of Tesla's Supercharger network has been circling a specific figure this year: a $12.99-a-month paid Charging Membership that lowers the per-kWh Supercharger rate for frequent chargers. It's a US product, but the underlying question — what's the cheapest way to charge a Tesla, and where does a referral fit against it — is exactly what UK buyers ask us. Here's the honest comparison, because Tesla doesn't negotiate on price the way a conventional dealer does, and the referral is the closest thing to that leverage a UK buyer actually gets.

What's actually happening in the US

With over 60,000 Superchargers now live across North America and full Model Y access, Tesla is selling a paid Charging Membership at $12.99/month that reduces the per-kWh Supercharger rate — reporting suggests it pays for itself at around four or more Supercharge sessions a month. The UK doesn't have a separate paid tier — it has a built-in split

There's no UK equivalent monthly membership fee published for this scheme, and we won't invent one. What the UK does already have, and what our own Charging Cost Calculator uses as its default, is a straightforward member vs non-member Supercharger rate: roughly 41p/kWh for members against 53p/kWh for non-members (checked 2026-07-13, source: Tesla UK Supercharging support page). The gap between those two numbers is effectively the same idea the US membership fee is chasing — a lower rate for people charging on the network regularly — just built into the account rather than sold as an add-on subscription.

Why the referral is the closer analogy to a "dealer discount" here

Tesla sells direct, with no dealer network and no haggling room on the sticker price — a structural difference from almost every other car brand a UK buyer might cross-shop. That's exactly why the referral's 650 free Supercharging miles function as the nearest thing to a negotiated discount UK buyers actually get: it's the one lever that isn't the list price itself, and it isn't conditional on a monthly subscription the way the US membership is.

Worked out at the two UK rates above, for a Model Y (RWD) (3.7 mi/kWh):

• At the member rate: 650 ÷ 3.7 ≈ 175.7 kWh × 41p ≈ £72
• At the non-member rate: the same 175.7 kWh × 53p ≈ £93
