One Tesla UK Order, Click to Delivery: A Worked Example

Sam Whitfield, UK EV writer & Tesla owner · published 2026-07-18 · figures checked 2026-07-13.

Explaining a process in the abstract only gets you so far. Here's one illustrative Model Y order, dated, with the referral attached and the actual maths behind the 650 free miles — so you can see exactly what happens and when, not just be told it in general terms.

Note on the dates: this is a worked example built from Tesla UK's published order mechanics and typical UK lead-time patterns — not a real customer's private order. Your own dates will differ; always check your live estimate in the Tesla app.

The scenario

A UK buyer wants a Model Y (RWD) (list price £44,990, 3.7 mi/kWh real-world efficiency). They drive roughly 8,000 miles a year and plan to charge mostly at home.

Day 0 — click, then configure

Monday: they open a referral link before touching the configurator. That single click attaches the code to the session. They then build the Model Y RWD on tesla.com/en_gb exactly as they'd have done anyway — the referral changes nothing about the configuration screen.

Day 0, minutes later — order summary check

Before paying the order fee, they check the order summary for the referral line confirming the free Supercharging miles. This is the one moment that matters: once the deposit is paid, a code can't be added or swapped in. It shows up correctly, so they pay.

Weeks 1–8 (illustrative) — build and allocation

Tesla gives an estimated delivery window that firms up as the car nears the end of the production/allocation queue; UK lead times move around with factory output and shipping, so we won't invent a fixed number of weeks here — check your own live estimate in the Tesla account app. During this window, the referral sits quietly attached to the order; there's nothing further to do on it.

This is also the sensible window to sort a home charger. If they're renting or in a flat and eligible, the EV chargepoint grant (up to £350, source: GOV.UK) is claimed through the installer, not through Tesla, and is worth starting early so the charger is live for delivery day. Use our Home Charger Cost Calculator to plan the install cost and payback.

Delivery day — the miles land

At handover, the account activates and the 650 free Supercharging miles appear against the new car. There's no separate claim step and no code to re-enter.

What those 650 miles are actually worth here
