Tesla Referral Code UK: Myths vs Facts

Most of the wrong information circulating about Tesla referrals in the UK isn't malicious — it's US terms and old scheme rules getting copied onto UK pages without a re-check. Here are the eight we run into most, corrected against Tesla UK's and GOV.UK's own current terms.
Myth: "A referral code gives you money off the purchase price of a new Model 3 or Model Y."
Fact: New-car referrals apply as 650 free Supercharging miles credited to the car's account, not a price cut. Only inventory (ex-demo/used) stock carries a cash-style £500 discount.
Myth: "You can stack two or more referral codes on one order for extra miles."
Fact: One referral applies per order. Whichever code was attached first — and confirmed on the order summary before you paid — is the one that counts; a second code doesn't add on top.
Myth: "Any UK Tesla buyer can claim the government's Electric Car Grant of up to £3,750."
Fact: That grant is restricted to EVs priced under roughly £37,000. Every current Tesla starts at £39,990, so no current Tesla order qualifies — confirm the live threshold at GOV.UK rather than assuming it applies.
Myth: "A UK referral gets you free Full Self-Driving, like some US-style promotions suggest."
Fact: FSD (Supervised) isn't road-legal or generally available on UK roads, so there's nothing for a UK referral to unlock there. The UK benefit is Supercharging miles only.
Myth: "If you rent your home or live in a flat, you're excluded from home-charger grant help."
Fact: It's the opposite under the current scheme: the EV chargepoint grant (up to £350) specifically targets renters and flat owners (plus some other groups) — while many owner-occupiers with an existing driveway no longer qualify.
Myth: "A referral code expires quickly, so you have to use it within days of getting it."
Fact: The buyer-side benefit isn't time-capped that way. What is capped is a referrer's own reward: their Supercharging credits expire 12 months from grant (extendable to a maximum of 36 months with new referrals), and referrers are limited to 10 successful referrals per calendar year.
Myth: "You can add a referral code after paying your order fee if you forgot at checkout."
Fact: No — it has to be attached before the order fee is paid. It can't be added retroactively once the deposit is in, and it can't be applied after delivery either.
Myth: "Model S and Model X buyers in the UK can still use a referral code for a discount."
Fact: Model S and Model X were removed from the UK referral programme in March 2026, alongside changes to their UK availability. The current programme covers Model 3 and Model Y only.
Why these myths persist
Almost every one of them traces back to the same root cause: a US aggregator's claim, or an old UK scheme's terms, getting repeated on a newer page without being re-verified against Tesla UK's live Refer and Earn page or GOV.UK's own grant terms. Programmes change — S/X left the UK referral scheme in March 2026, the chargepoint grant's eligibility shifted toward renters and flats, and FSD went subscription-only in May 2026 — and a page written even a year earlier can be confidently wrong today.
