Does When You Order Actually Change What a Tesla Referral Is Worth?

Buyers often ask if there's a "best month" to order a Tesla in the UK for referral or tax reasons. Most of the calendar dates that genuinely matter here aren't about your order date at all — they're about three separate schedules running in the background. Here's what's real, mapped against the calendar, and what's just a rumour we won't repeat without a source.

The one date that's about your order, not the calendar

Only one timing rule is actually about when you personally act: the referral code must be attached before you pay the order fee. That's not a seasonal thing — it applies every single day of the year, and it's the only "timing tip" that can cost you the 650 miles if you get it wrong. Everything below is about other people's clocks, not yours.

The BiK tax-year schedule (6 April each year)

Company-car Benefit-in-Kind rates for zero-emission cars are set per tax year on a published schedule: 3% for 2025/26, 4% for 2026/27, rising to 5% for 2027/28 (source: HMRC company car tax rules). A common assumption is that ordering just before a rate rise "locks in" the lower percentage for years — it doesn't. The rate that applies is whichever tax year you're actually driving the car in, not the year you placed the order. If your Tesla is delivered in, say, February but you're still using it into the next tax year, the new year's rate applies from 6 April regardless of your order date.

The referrer's calendar-year cap (1 January reset)

This one matters if you're the person giving out a code, not receiving one. Referrers are capped at 10 successful referrals per calendar year, and that cap resets every 1 January. It has no effect on a buyer using someone else's code — the buyer-side benefit isn't capped — but it's why a well-used referral code might occasionally sit near its owner's yearly limit late in the year.

The Supercharging credit expiry window (rolling, per referral)

A referrer's earned Supercharging credits expire 12 months from the date they're granted, but that window extends — up to a maximum of 36 months — each time a fresh referral lands. For someone actively sharing their code, spacing referrals so a new one arrives before the previous credit's 12-month window lapses keeps the runway extending; letting more than 12 months pass with no new referral risks losing the earlier credit.

What we won't claim: a "best quarter" to order

You may have seen claims that Tesla pushes harder on deliveries near the end of a financial quarter, implying a timing advantage for buyers who order or take delivery in that window. We don't have a primary, UK-specific source confirming a reliable pattern like that for referral purposes, so we're not going to state one as fact — the honest answer is to ask your delivery specialist directly about your own build slot rather than time an order around a rumour.

The bottom line

For a buyer, there's really one timing rule: click the referral link before you pay. The tax-year, referrer-cap and credit-expiry calendars are worth knowing so you're not caught out by someone else's assumption, but none of them change what ordering this month versus next month is worth to you.
