Tracking the Ten-Per-Year Referral Cap Across a Year End

Two boundaries govern a referrer's rewards and they are measured from different events. The cap runs on the calendar year. The expiry runs from the Grant Date. Orders placed in December and delivered in January sit across both, so this is a tracking problem rather than a rule to memorise.
The two boundaries
The cap: the first 10 successful referrals per calendar year pay the referrer, and the counter resets on 1 January. The expiry: Tesla Credits run 12 months from the Grant Date; Supercharging distance runs 6.
The Grant Date is when Tesla posts the benefit to an account — not the order date, and not delivery day. Before it, the referral shows as pending.
The tracker
Four columns are enough, and a spreadsheet beats memory because the pending period can run for weeks:

The December-to-January case
A referral counts when it succeeds rather than when the order was placed, and success arrives at the Grant Date. So a December order settling in January is, on the ordinary reading, a new-year referral: it uses a slot from the new allowance and starts its expiry clock in January.
This site will not present that as a published rule, because Tesla has not published one at this level of detail. The tracker resolves it empirically: the app shows a date next to a balance, and that date is the answer for your account.
Who needs this
Only two groups. A referrer at or near ten in December, for whom a January settlement is good news because it does not consume an exhausted allowance. And a referrer with slots to spare in December, for whom those slots expire with the year and are not rescued by a January settlement. Everyone referring one or two people a year can ignore the whole question.
What you cannot manage by timing
The Grant Date. It follows settlement, which follows delivery, which follows production and logistics. Advice to place an order in a particular week to land a grant in a particular year is describing a variable nobody controls. What is controllable — whether the referral is attached at all — is decided before configuration and cannot be fixed afterwards.
Why the pending column is the one people get wrong
Two mistakes recur. The first is counting pending referrals toward the cap, which overstates how close a referrer is to their ten and can cause them to stop sharing a code that still had slots. The second is treating a long pending period as a problem: it is not, because every expiry clock starts at the Grant Date, so a referral pending for two months has simply not started counting. The tracker fixes both by forcing status and Grant Date into separate columns rather than collapsing them into "done".
The expiry side of the boundary
An early-January grant is the friendliest timing: twelve months of credit life runs almost to the following year end, and a six-month distance allowance covers spring and summer, when long trips are easiest. A late-December grant produces a distance allowance expiring in June. Either way the 30-day warning email is the last prompt, and one mechanism extends credits — a further successful referral moves the whole balance to 12 months from the newest Grant Date.
